Friday the 13th

2 comment(s)

I'm not such a superstitious person, especially when it comes to the number 13. I got reminded that today is such a day by chip-pea, as I was lamenting to her about my day so far ...

Woke up late this morning, and as usual, went to the loo to brush my teeth. The tap greeted me with a few chokes of "gluck" and no water gushing out. Hmmm... this is strange. I opened the other tap. Same thing. Looked at myself in the mirror and uttered "This is not happening". Went to check on the taps in the other loo and in the kitchen. What'dya know? NO WATER! There must be a water cut. I grumpily picked up the phone and dialled hub's number to complain. He says he didn't receive any notification from the management company regarding this water cut. So, he sms-ed me their number and I called them. The man on the line confirmed that there was a cut - "Emergency" situation which they didn't plan as they had to do some repair works to another block. I try not to get too pissed off. He assures me that the water cut should not last for more than 2 hours... FINE. Come 1pm, if i still find no water, i'm going to get really upset!

And because of this strange habit of mine, I cannot eat anything without brushing my teeth. So, i shall be hungry till water supply gets restored.

Switched on the lappy and again try to connect wirelessly. It doesn't work AGAIN. Today, i have to call up Netgear and make sure they repair it since it's still under warranty. We bought it just under 2 years ago. I had to hardwire the lappy to the router. It's been my daily routine for the past week. It is getting abit sien.

True to what he says, at 1pm, i hear water gurgling in the pipework. I walked over to the kitchen to check! Hooray! Water supply is restored. The 1st thing i did was to wash the bowls and plates left in the sink. And I'm not even sure if i brushed my teeth as i'm typing this. I had no choice but to eat earlier (before the water came back) as I was really getting famished! (And i shouldn't starve my baby)

So, how did YOUR Friday the 13th go?

CGLow has got a blog now (or rather, he now bothered to update it). It's a mix of techy stuff and most importantly, updates on his impending BIG DAY - In October.

I've added it on my sidebar.

Easter Weekend

It's a long weekend.. which is great as I get to spend more time with the hubs. As easter falls on Sunday, and no shops will be opened on Easter Sunday, we would probably just relax tomorrow. (Hubs will be cleaning and tidying up the apartment... while I.. I'll just sit down and relax.)

Today, we did a day trip to Cambridge. The weather was lovely - sunny and mild with temperature of about 16degrees celsius. Quite a perfect spring day! We started the journey out of London only at 11am (as I woke up late and took about an hour getting ready). We reached Cambridge at lunch time and since I've done my research way beforehand, we even know where to park (i even found out carpark rates, which is very handy) and it only takes 10mins to walk to the city centre, walking through a huge field filled with people and activities.

We decided to walk around the city centre, heading towards the market square. We soon found ourselves attracted to some off-season designer sale :) Then, rumbling tummies dictated the next agenda - lunch! We both went around to search for authentic pub food and found one not too long later. M ordered their fresh fish and I opted for vongole. The lesson of the day? Should always order pub food in a pub! My vongole was a disappointment but hub's fish lived up to its name (FRESH!).

Since both of us have been to Cambridge, we decided that we'd want a relaxing trip. So, keeping to my pace (which is resting/sitting every half hour and walking at the speed of a turtle!)... we found ourselves on one of the bridges across Cam River. The scenery was picture perfect! Too bad hubs won't allow me to go on a punting cruise.. I really wanted to do that since I missed out on that during my trip here as a student. :(

Meanwhile, back in London, the annual Oxford-Cambridge boat race competition ended with Cambridge claiming victory!

Anyhoo.. we took some pictures around the river and walked back to the city centre where we hitched a ride on their free city-circle bus. Alas, we alight at the stop nearest to the carpark and made our way back - across the fields where nerds chill out ... and that, concluded our day in Cambridge.

More on digital scrapbooking..

Dinah posted an FAQ on digital scrapbooking on Saturday (and it coincides with me turning 29, eh?). Haha!

Anyway, apart from the websites recommended by Dinah, I've found one which offers pretty lovely kits as well. Like Dinah, I use Adobe Photoshop to assemble my scrapbook (there are other softwares available but since I use abit of PS, I didn't bother learning the other softwares).

*EDITED*
Praveen has found a cool link - digital scrapbooking online! Without needing to learn PS! Go
here

Of course, if you have stumbled upon other sites, do feel free to drop me a note :)

Digital Scrapbooking

So, what do I do when the hubs is away on biz trip? I decided to try my hands on some digital scrapbooking. Thanks to Dinah (i read her blog occasionally and her scrapbooking has really amazed me!) who pointed me to the right direction!

My first attempt at digital scrapbooking for our baby :) It's all pink although I try to stay away from the pink = girl theme.. but i just can't help it. They look too cute! To tone down the pink effect - I added some yellow & green buttons all around.

I spent the whole afternoon downloading templates, kits, embellishments to do this. And of course, trying to figure out how to use Photoshop again (after 1 year of not using it). I must admit I quite enjoy it :) Will see what else I will do tomorrow.

And yes, I have another project to learn up in the next 3 months. Maybe I'll look into it tomorrow. That one looks abit tough. It reminds me of the time when I was trying to learn Flash (CG had patiently try to teach me but it's just too difficult!).

The whole afternoon gone and now it's time to cook dinner... for myself.

Initially, I suspected our internet provider was at fault. Called their number numerous times, and no one picked up the phone, their message on their helpline says "Pls remember that all queries can be handled by our technical assistants on our website." I sniggered at the statement.

Had lunch with friends yesterday and chatted with a fren, SK on this, he tries to troubleshoot my problem :
1. Modem/Router problem? (I insisted my router's doing fine)
2. Laptop problem? (I insist my sturdy laptop is reliable!)
3. Service provider? (Definitely)

We/he kinda concluded that most likely it's my router having issues as i wasn't able to initiate communication with it wirelessly (most likely wireless component is fried). Coming home, I tried hardwiring my laptop with the router and voila! It works. So, yeah, definitely the wireless component of the router. :(

But I still can't go on Twitter. Is Twitter's host having problems again? Seems like my KL friends are constantly updating their lives on Twitter. Hmmmm...

Ok, am just glad I can post this now. :)

A Twitter-er? Why, of course!

Don’t know about you, but the past 2 days has been agonizing : internet connection-wise. Connecting into the latest obsession of mine – Twitter – has proved to be a real tortoise-slow torture!

Just what is Twitter? Introduced to me by good friend Praveen (internet guru), he offered his opinion on this service launched officially in the US half a year ago but the idea actually took life about a year ago (13 Mar),“It’s a great tool to update your daily happenings and have it broadcast to your circle of friends”, to which I quipped, “But we have blogs to do that!” Almost rolling my eyes. “Yes. But Tsu Lin, wouldn’t it be nice to know (while you’re on the go) what your friends are also doing with live updates to your mobile (or your chosen mode of device)? ie Praveen is diving off the Great Barrier Reef”. Hmmm.. to convince me, I decided to put it to test.

7,000 miles and 1 week later, I find myself registering into Twitter’s mobile phone notification service. As this service is based in the UK, I’m only charged a local rate when I send my twitter updates onto the site. Pretty nifty! Praveen has his registered back in KL and he’s being charged the standard international charge. No other hidden costs of using this service, which is an ultimate PLUS!

So far, I'm hooked!

But wouldn’t it be great if a local solution were to be offered instead? According to Praveen, there would be a local solution coming up soon by the people of RapidStuff. Of course, all is still hush-hush about this project, but do “standby for an alternative which will be a whole lot more fun!”

Even the name is pretty original.

1st weekend in London

SAT :
Met up with the SIL, Alicia for yumcha on Saturday. For reasons i still do not comprehend, these Aussies (hubs included in this case) like to call their dim sums "yumcha". To us M'sians, as the phrase suggests, "yumcha" should only mean "Drink Tea/beverages", and it should not matter if it's teatime, brunch, breakfast, or supper. :P Anyway on Sat, we popped over to our favourite nearbyrestaurant. Dim Sum was good, we wanted to order the suckling pig but today, they ran out of it.

The SIL brought a little gift for the baby - a Baby Journal. Very sweet! Now.. if only I can bring myself to scribble on its pristine pages.

My Baby's Journal

The rest of the day was spent around this area... and even a visit to the local chinese grocery place where we stocked up on essentials.

SUN :
A busy day. We started the day early as we wanted to go to the Baby Show at ExCeL London before lunchtime. Had our brunch and was out by 11am. We quickly found a parking after paying £6 for 2 hours of parking and made our way in.

A truly good show with floors covering 2 football fields? The place was huge but luckily isn't packed to the brim, which makes browsing, product testing and walking more enjoyable. We first walked around the place looking at products we are interested and comparing prices. After deciding the model we want, we proceeded to buy them. Here, we managed to get all the baby essentials :

1. Maclaren Techno XLR Travel System - Stroller, car seat, foot muffs, rain cover.
2. Avent Breastfeeding solutions.
3. Tommy Tippee nappy wrapper - The sales pitch : "At the end of it, u just twist this thing, lift it up and throw this sausage looking thingy away!". Haha, nappy wrapped sausages, indeed!
4. Bath tub
5. Nursing pillow

Of course, there are samples galore. During halftime, we went out to grab something to eat & drink and made our way back in.

I'm now recuperating from the 2 days adventure. :P Can't wait for next weekend.

Temptations

is also ironically MAS's shopping magazine.

"Sweet in Pink"

Anyway, the day before I were to leave to London, Soo Yin invited us over to her place for a small gathering. The usual suspects were thr : WS & M, me, ES & Jac. It's there that I was introduced to the device that is DS Lite. They all had one each : WS & ES with their black or dark blue ones, SY with her very delicious PINK one! Apparently CKP has a white one. I'm so tempted to get the light blue one so we all in the group have all the colours. We networked up the 3 DS's and played a few rounds of that-game-which-name-I-forgot.
Should I, should I not
? The hubby reckons not... but yesterday he showed me the cool Bose headphones (noise cancellation) (I think it's this model) tht he probably acquired during his trips to the US! He refused to tell me how much.. Anyway, the DS Lite sells for £99 at Amazon (with free delivery). Definitely worth thinking about - I want the game we played tht Saturday. (There's a guy on the same flight as me who brought out his white DS Lite.) Truly a good companion on flights.

Anyway, thanks SY & E for being the lovely host and for the lovely tea! The Suanson's Orange Chiffon Cake was absolutely lovely. If not for the diabetes, I would've finished the whole cake. (Must_have_self_control! Arrgh)

London : the flight went smoothly and i didn't get to sleep much in their almost-flatbed bed. I probably slept for 2 hours. I did manage to watch some shows though - Happy Feet (fell asleep halfway, oops!), Stranger Than Fiction (didn't finish watching it despite Praveen's rave review) and Deja Vu. I quite enjoy Deja Vu - The concept of time travel in the show isn't very convincing nor belieavable to me BUT despite tht, (and let's assume tht I bought into the concept).. the movie's storyline and acting are very enjoyable. I also watched a little of "The Banquet" at the last 20mins of flight. I found myself fast-forwarding every now & then. Don't think I'll quite like it.

Arriving at Heathrow, the assistance i requested promptly brought me from plane - immigration - baggage collection in less than 20mins. :) Hubs waited at the arrival hall and spotted me straight away! We were however, caught in the traffic and took 1.5 hours to reach Docklands. We had dinner before coming home. Love the car we bought! Yayy.. no more buses and DLRs and Underground for me. :P

Baby : The little one kicked me halfway through the night. I think she was awaken by her daddy's snoring. Haha. And I felt her kicking at 10kicks/min last night. "Daddy, stop snoring!", she must be signalling. But she must've taken a liking to her dad as when he puts his hands on the tummy, she displayed her football skills to him. :)

More temptations : The hubs opened the fridge yesterday and showed me the 2 tubs of Haagen Dazs he bought (one for me)! ARGH. (Must_have_self_control! Arrgh)
